Among over 210 islands, the most popular are Santorini, Paros, Naxos, and Mykonos, as well as Syros with its beautiful city Ermoupolis, the capital of the archipelago, Tinos, Andros, and Ios. These islands are favored for island hopping through the Cyclades due to the short journeys between Mykonos, Paros, and Naxos, which last less than an hour, with ferries sailing several times a day during the summer between the islands. Santorini stands out as the most spectacular island of the Cyclades, thanks to its villages situated on the edge of a huge volcanic crater, offering a spectacular view. Mykonos has cultivated an atmosphere where glamour and naturalness, chic nightlife, good shopping, and peaceful sandy beaches harmoniously coexist. Naxos, the largest and greenest island of the Cyclades, attracts visitors with its raw nature and sandy beaches in the South. The North of Paros offers excellent conditions for wind and kite surfers, while Parikia’s streets captivate young people. The largest islands of the Cyclades include Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Folegandros, Gyaros, Ios, Milos, Naxos, Paros, Kea, Kythnos, Makronisos, Mykonos, Santorini, Serifos, Sifnos, Sikinos, Syros, and Tinos.

Description of the best known Cyclades islands

View of the Cladera of Santorini

Santorini

Santorini presents a unique landscape compared to other Cycladic islands. Its current shape is the result of a powerful volcanic eruption around 1500 B.C., leaving behind the main island of Santorini, neighboring islands Thirassia, Nea Kameni, Palia Kameni, and Aspronisi, as well as the giant crater “Caldera,” which plunged into the sea. Thira, the capital of the island, is situated on the West side, on the edge of the high cliffs of Caldera. The typical houses in Thira boast a unique architectural style: small and whitewashed, adorned with arches and numerous small windows. Its narrow streets are lined with boutiques, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Oia (spelled Ia) on the North coast offers breathtaking views. The picturesque village’s houses were built with drained lava rocks. The winding roads lead to the traditional ports of Ammoudi and Armeni.

Mykonos

Though only 85 square kilometers, Mykonos has become one of the most renowned islands in the Aegean. Many tourists, staying on neighboring islands like Paros or Naxos, begin their journey on Mykonos due to its airport, the second-largest in the Cyclades. It serves as a starting point for island hopping through the Cyclades. Mykonos boasts 3000 hours of sunshine per year, golden sandy beaches with crystal-clear waters, and traditional architecture characterized by white and blue houses. Its direct neighbor, the ancient island of Delos, with its ruins, also attracts numerous tourists. Mykonos offers excellent ferry connections with Piraeus, Rafina, Heraklion (Crete), Santorini, Ios, Paros, Naxos, Skiathos, Syros, Thessaloniki, and Tinos. You can fly to Mykonos from Athens, Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Dusseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, Monaco, Vienna, Salzburg, Zurich, and many other cities in Europe, making it one of the most accessible islands of the Cyclades.

Naxos is known for its long sandy beaches and green hills.

Naxos

Naxos, the largest island in the Cyclades, stands out for its diverse landscape. It boasts the highest mountain in the Cyclades (1,001 m high Zas), vast olive groves, and miles-long beaches. Visitors, surfers, and art enthusiasts are drawn to Naxos, one of the wealthiest and most powerful islands in the Cyclades. The island’s marble, dating back to prehistoric times, is renowned, with the first sculpture schools appearing on Naxos. Its narrow streets offer tranquility, while the promenade features small hotels, taverns, cafes, and souvenir shops. The beautiful, long sandy beaches in the South of the capital Chora invite tourists to relax in the crystal-clear waters.

Paros

Paros, an important and wealthy island in ancient times, exported Parian marble, the oldest in the world, to major countries. Today, it is a vacation paradise with beautiful beaches, picturesque villages, and historical sights, including a marble gallery. Paros, alongside Mykonos and Santorini, is one of the best-known islands in the Cyclades. Despite the 755-meter-high Agios-Ilias-Massif, the landscape mainly comprises vast fertile plains. The charming beaches of Parikia and Naoussa, with their traditional architecture, countless whitewashed churches, and fishing boats, are trademarks of the island. Kolimbithres in the North offers small, almost private bays with fine sandy beaches ideal for families with children and non-swimmers. Paros offers a blend of quiet corners and vibrant nightlife spots.

Amorgos

Amorgos, the largest among the smaller Cyclades islands, covers over 126 sq. km, captivating visitors with its stunning beaches, mountainous landscapes, and traditional lifestyle. Chora, the island’s capital, combines traditional architecture with rich historical tradition. Remarkable landmarks include Agioi Pantes Church, the cathedral, Vlissani, Agios Nikolaos, Fotodoti Christou monastery, and the historical castle. The Byzantine Panagia Chosoriotissa monastery, situated in Kato Meria, holds religious and historical significance. The bay of Katapola, along with its simple Cycladic architecture and fishing port, creates picturesque scenery. Notable attractions include Panagia Katapoliani Church, Byzantine Church of Evangelismos, Mount Mountoulia with ruins of ancient Minoa, the old dam, and Lefkes. Amorgos boasts beautiful beaches, including Kato Akrotiri.

Koufonsia

Southeast of Naxos lies Koufonissia, consisting of three islands with outstanding beaches and secluded bays: Pano Koufonisi, Kato Koufonisi, and Keros. Pano Koufonisi, the smallest and most densely populated island, is a fishing hub. Kato Koufonisi, nearly uninhabited, boasts beautiful, isolated beaches popular among nudists. Keros, an uninhabited island, is protected as an archaeological monument, housing significant artifacts from the Cycladic culture. Surrounding uninhabited islands include Porios, Koufonisi, Charokopos, and Parianos.

Ios island

Ios, one of the smallest Greek islands, is located in the South of the Cyclades, covering an area of 100 sq. km, with a population of approximately 1500 inhabitants. The island thrives on tourism, attracting visitors from the Greek mainland and abroad, particularly young people, during the summer months. Chora, the island’s center, is known for its vibrant nightlife. Away from the capital, peace can be found on marvelous beaches and bays, offering tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle. Ios boasts over 350 churches and chapels with blue domes, adding to its charm. You can travel to Gialos with ferries, which isa rather quiet place with taverns and nice shopping opportunities. There are good connections to Chora, one of the most idyllic villages of Cyclades.
